‘Flare’: Poems For Marissa (Feminista Jones)

Today kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Chicago Alliance to Free Marissa Alexander (CAFMA) is committed to ‘Keeping Marissa in Mind‘ throughout October and beyond.

We’ve asked supporters to film themselves reading Nikky Finney’s beautiful poem Flare and to send a link to us at freemarissachicago@gmail.com. Supporters are welcome to send video of themselves reading any poem that they would like to dedicate to Marissa during DV awareness month. We’d love to post a new submission every day this month so please participate.

Today’s video submission comes from social worker, writer and activist Feminista Jones. We thank her for supporting Marissa and for her beautiful reading of Flare.

Please submit your own video reading of Flare or another poem of your choice dedicated to Marissa. Also, find out how you can help Marissa win her freedom here.
